NEMA 7 Explosion-Proof VFD XV7 Series
Pump, fan, compressor, and conveyor applications in classified environments require precise speed control without compromising the explosion-proof integrity of the installation. Cordyne's XV7 Series is a NEMA 7 explosion-proof VFD engineered specifically for this requirement. By housing the drive inside an explosion-proof enclosure with a proprietary ventilation system, the XV7 provides full variable frequency control in hazardous locations without relying on compressed air or purge-and-pressurization systems.
The XV7 Series is designed and manufactured in-house at our Houston, TX, facility for installations across oil and gas, petrochemical, chemical processing, mining, pharmaceutical, food processing, and wastewater treatment operations.
Cordyne Motor Starter Selector
To help find the motor starter with your exact requirements, we have created a Motor Starter Selector Tool in which you are able to input your requirements and be matched with the appropriate motor starter.
We are proud to offer our state-of-the-art XV7 Series. By encapsulating a VFD in a NEMA 7 explosion-proof enclosure, we are able to create a safe area in which the VFD is not at risk of igniting the surrounding atmosphere. The key to this ground-breaking design lies within the ventilation system. Our proprietary design allows ventilation to be achieved, but should an explosion occur within the panel, flames will not escape and ignite the surrounding atmosphere.
In addition to the numerous benefits that a VFD imparts on a motor (precise control, increased efficiency, and longer life expectancy), Our XV7 Series brings a number of operational benefits to the table.
- Can be mounted in whatever is deemed as the ideal location.
- Substantial increase in operator efficiency
- Less travel time to and from enclosure
- Better view of that which is being controlled.
- Substantial increase in operator efficiency
- Wire and conduit from the drive to the motor are greatly reduced, reducing installation time and cost.
- Compressed air is not needed, meaning:
- New air hoses do not need to be run, reducing installation time and cost.
- Compressor downtime translates to drive downtime. Elimination of the compressor means elimination of its downtime, reducing the total downtime of the drive.
How the XV7 Explosion-Proof Drive Eliminates Compressed Air Dependency
The XV7 encapsulates a variable frequency drive within a NEMA 7-rated enclosure that contains any internal ignition events and prevents flames or hot gases from reaching the surrounding atmosphere. Cordyne's proprietary ventilation design manages the heat generated by the drive during operation while maintaining the enclosure's explosion-proof rating. This eliminates the need for compressed air infrastructure entirely.
Without a purge system, the explosion-proof drive is not subject to shutdown when air pressure is lost. That results in a hazardous location VFD that operates independently of external support systems, reducing both installation complexity and unplanned downtime risk.
NEMA 7 Ratings, HP Range, and Hazardous Area Classifications
The XV7 Series is rated for Class I, Division 1 and Division 2 locations and is housed in a NEMA 7 explosion-proof enclosure. Units are available from fractional HP through 500 HP across standard industrial voltage ranges, and each unit is configured to match the motor ratings, ambient conditions, and hazardous-area classification specified by the customer.
Cordyne engineers each XV7 to the application. Provide your motor horsepower, voltage, service factor, ambient temperature range, and area classification, and our team will configure the appropriate drive, enclosure, and thermal management package.
Explosion-Proof Enclosure Construction and Mounting Flexibility
XV7 enclosures are cast from copper-free aluminum (max 0.25% copper content) and are suitable for NEMA 7 applications. Standard construction includes integral cast mounting feet, hinged covers, stainless steel captive cover bolts, ground lug packages, and steel mounting pans. Finish options include aluminum, stainless steel shot, and sandblasted natural. Every unit is assembled, pre-wired, and tested before shipment.
The explosion-proof VFD can be mounted at or near the motor it controls. Locating the drive close to the point of use shortens wire and conduit runs between the drive and motor, reducing material costs, installation labor, and voltage drop over distance. For facilities with classified areas distributed across large sites, this flexibility can simplify both system design and ongoing operations.
UL Listed, ISO Certified, and Ready for Regulated Installations
Cordyne is a UL 508A, 698A, and 1203 certified panel shop and holds ISO 9001:2015 certification. All XV7 units are built in compliance with applicable UL, CSA, NEC, and ATEX standards. Our quality assurance process provides the documentation and traceability that regulated installations require, from design through final acceptance testing.
Where the XV7 Explosion-Proof VFD Is Used
The XV7 Series is specified for applications requiring variable-speed control in hazardous atmospheres.
Common installations include:
- Oil and gas: Production and injection pumps in upstream and midstream operations
- Mining: Ventilation fans in underground and surface classified areas
- Chemical and petrochemical: Process pumps, mixers, and agitators in refining and production facilities
- Food and grain processing: Conveyors and material handling systems in dust-classified environments
- Wastewater treatment: Aeration blowers and process pumps in municipal and industrial plants
- Pharmaceutical: HVAC and process control motors in classified manufacturing areas
In each case, the NEMA 7 explosion-proof VFD provides the speed control, energy efficiency, and extended motor life that a VFD enables, within an enclosure rated for the classified environment.

Frequently Asked Questions About Explosion-Proof VFDs
What is the difference between a NEMA 7 enclosure and a NEMA 4X enclosure for hazardous locations?
A NEMA 7 enclosure is designed to contain an internal explosion and prevent ignition of the surrounding atmosphere. It is rated for Class I, Division 1 locations where flammable gases are present during normal operations. A NEMA 4X enclosure provides environmental protection against corrosion, water, and dust, but is not rated to contain an internal explosion. NEMA 4X enclosures may be used in Division 2 locations with appropriate protection methods, but Division 1 applications require a NEMA 7 or equivalent explosion-proof rating.
Can the XV7 be used with any brand of motor?
Yes. Cordyne engineers each XV7 to the customer's specified motor ratings, including horsepower, voltage, and service factor. The drive is configured and tested to operate with the motor specified for your application, regardless of manufacturer.
What information do I need to provide when requesting a quote?
At a minimum, provide the motor horsepower, voltage, service factor, ambient temperature range at the installation site, and the hazardous area classification (Class, Division, and Group). Any additional site-specific requirements, such as communication protocols, auxiliary contacts, or space constraints, will help our engineering team configure the right unit for your project.
